Ironic excerpts from a guide for families traveling to Disneyland ("the happiest place on earth"):

During a trip to Disneyland earlier this month, I stood in long lines for rides beside parents who hissed threats to keep their squirming, whining kids under control. And at lunch, an exasperated grandmother at the table next to me warned a wailing, flailing toddler, "If your mother won't smack you, I will."

Some 7-year-olds love Disneyland's Space Mountain, an in-the-dark swooping, jolting roller coaster. Some 12-year-olds hate it. A grade-school boy seated behind me screamed the whole time, "I hate this. I want to go home."

When you set out for a Disney day, be prepared.
Wear comfortable shoes: You'll be on your feet all day. Take a hat and sunscreen: I saw lots of white teens scorched painful pink.
